Indonesia ends asylum seeker stand

AAP

A six-month asylum seeker stand-off at an Indonesian port has finally come to an end.

The Sri Lankans’ boat was headed for Christmas Island in October last year when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono stop it in Indonesian waters.

But the ethnic Tamils – then numbering 254, including 31 children – subsequently refused to disembark at the Javan port of Merak, fearing they would be forced to wait in Indonesia for years before being resettled.

More than six months later, Indonesian authorities finally moved to end the impasse on Monday.

The asylum seekers did not resist as the majority were moved from the boat and nearby accommodation to buses bound for Jakarta.

The Tamils were expected to board flights bound for Indonesia’s Riau Islands province later on Monday.

It’s believed they will be taken to the Australia-funded detention centre in the province’s city of Tanjung Pinang.

Awesome Job or Devious Scam?

Anyone who has ever looked for a job has certainly seen countless ads that simply sound too good to be true. What do these ads look like? They probably included phrases such as:

Make $4,000 a Week from Home — No Sales!

No experience necessary!

Earn $35,000 – $50,000 a year working part-time!

Sounds great, right? Well, like most things in life, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is. From envelope-stuffing schemes to mystery shopper promotions, the world of scam ads is wide and complex. The problem with many work-at-home schemes is that they require the worker to spend their own money to get started, and once they do, there’s often no return on investment. In many cases, you will have to foot the bill for supplies, starter kits, training and more. Other situations that claim to be “easy money with no sales” often do involve a great deal of sales work in challenging environments.

Home Job Placement Reviews

  • Ann says:

    April 26th, 2010 at 1:34 pm (#)

Sorry to hear of everyone’s bad experiences with Work At Home jobs, especially the racket that has been portrayed on this Reviewopedia.com Web site.

I thought I would offer some heartening news of someone who actually works at home and has a couple at-home jobs.

I work at home, but I work at home as a Sr. Editor with a very well-established e-publisher. Found the job through Craigslist.com, when the e-pub company was first being founded back in 2006; I’m still there, and have a stable of authors. My publisher pays us for our work (quite good, actually, for e-pubishing), and we get bonuses.

BUT, many other e-publishers don’t pay; you work for free.

  • Dressing for Success

An article in U.S.A. Today spoke about candidates for jobs wearing jeans, purple sweat suits, and spike heels or sneakers. Other applicants weren’t afraid to show pierced body parts and spiked hair. Still others chewed gum or showed up in rumpled clothes or with their pants falling down. One recruiter even told a candidate with his trousers down below his hips, to “Pull your pants up.” According to the article, the outlandish dress costs some candidates the job.

    Dress Your Best When Interviewing

Does it really make a difference how you dress for an interview? In many cases, it does. I’ll never forget the gentleman I interviewed for an accounting position. He had been out of work for a few months and wanted to show me why. He took off his jacket, unbuttoned his shirt and started to pull down his pants (this is a true story) to show me the scar from a boat propeller that had injured him. He didn’t get the job. Neither did the young lady in a bright red skirt so short and tight that she could hardly sit down!

In the conservative business climate I worked in at the time, appearances did matter. In other environments it isn’t as important. However, it does make sense to dress your best for the interview, regardless of the dress code at the organization. If you’re in doubt about how to dress for an interview, it is best to err on the side of conservatism. It is much better to be overdressed than underdressed (or undressed). If you’re not sure, check with the person who scheduled the interview and ask.

According to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics, 55% of another person’s perception of you is based on how you look. Her Dressing for Success information gives some tips on how to look your best, without necessarily spending a lot of money. Here’s a quick look at the basics:
